We were delighted to hear about Hardeep Kumar’s dream garden, which she was able to create in the outdoor space of the four-bedroom William Davis home that she purchased in March with her husband Vijay.
The couple chose the exclusive Oak Grange development in Littleover following Vijay’s retirement after 40 years as an engineer at Rolls Royce.
This beautiful development of new-build homes gave Hardeep a blank canvas to create the garden of her dreams in just a few months.
“I wanted to create a garden which is attractive, relaxing and brings back lots of lovely memories,” said Hardeep. She has achieved this by decorating the garden with ornaments and mementos that she and her husband have collected over the years from various countries they have visited, including Mauritius and Mexico.
Despite being an amateur gardener, it has only taken Hardeep a few months to turn the outdoor space into a beautiful split-level garden full of colourful plants, bushes and shrubs.
“I’m not a gardening expert,” she says. “I do it all by instinct. I don’t know the names of all the plants, they just have to be pleasing to the eye. If I see a pretty plant, I buy it. I suppose I must have green fingers. I bought a few bags of manure from the local farm and used some elbow grease to mix it all in. It really has been a labour of love.”
A focal point of the garden is the impressive water feature of stacked slate and tumbled white marble, with a majestic metallic heron standing in the water. Installed by Steve Beecham of Universal Aquascapes in Derbyshire, the water feature boasts a 700-litre underground reservoir.
Putting their stamp on the garden has been a family effort, with Hardeep choosing and planting the greenery, and husband Vijay constructing a series of eye-catching wooden trellises along the main wall.
Between the plants are nestled various ornamental creatures, which have all been given names by the couple’s four-year-old grandson. Ollie the Owl, Shaun the Sheep and Hedgie the Hedgehog look very much at home in the beautiful surroundings of the Kumars’ garden.
“I’ve put my heart and soul into this garden and it’s lovely to sit back and enjoy it,” Hardeep says. “But there’s always work to do.”
The couple’s next project in the garden is to create a vegetable plot, which they can enjoy with their grandchildren.
