Tips for gardening in May

NOW THE WEATHER IS WARMER AND SUNNIER AND THE SPRING FLOWERS ARE IN FULL BLOOM, IT'S A WONDERFUL TIME TO GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE GARDEN. HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO IN YOURS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR...

Things to do in the garden in May

May is a wonderful time of year to dig out your gardening gloves and head outside to spruce up the garden ready for summer. Many of the spring bulbs will have already bloomed so now it’s time to think about some of the other things you can do.

Sow some seeds
There are all sorts of seed packs that you can plant now ready for summer flowering including sunflowers, cornflowers and poppies. Often all these seeds need is a light covering with soil and regular watering to get them going.

Start a veg patch or herb garden
If you haven’t already, May is the perfect month for planting all sorts of herbs such as chives, coriander, dill and parsley, or vegetables such as beetroot, broccoli, carrots, salad leaves and spinach.

Get some bedding plants
Bedding plants are a great way to brighten up your garden and add some vibrant colours to patio pots and borders. There are so many varieties to choose from including pansies, fuchsias and geraniums, and since some supermarkets now have them outside at this time of year, you can even pick up a few on your weekly shop.

Tidy up your pond
If you have a pond now is the time to start paying it a little attention once again. Fish will now be more active and need regular feeding and it’s also a good time to add some oxygenating plants or lilies to help keep green algae at bay.

Get the picture-perfect lawn
Giving your lawn the attention it needs with things like regular mowing, removing weeds and sowing grass seed, will all help you achieve the healthy vibrant green look ready for summer.
